I recently put on a 50th Birthday celebration for my mother at my home. I hired a jazz trio to play for 2 sets of 20 minutes. I made tasty gourmet appies, had a selection of teas, wines, and coffees, and provided posters of poems and pictures for my mom. It was a ladies only event and I only invited her close friends. I had a journal that everyone wrote notes in (and made an effort to get letters and notes from friends and family who live distances away). Our friend’s daughter made her a big glittery Happy Birthday sign. We had prizes and quizzes all about my mom and party favours with pretty things! We had a great time and she really appreciated it! Especially since I used her favourite colours to decorate.

The best gift I have ever gave my Mother was to take her to see Stars on Ice at a small arena. When I went to buy the tickets, the box office wasn’t open. So while I waited, I headed up to the arena restaurant (which turned out to be very good) and had lunch. I had a great conversation with the bartender/waiter and told him that I was buying tickets for my Mom and I to see Stars on Ice. He suggested that I book reservations for dinner before the show…but didn’t exactly tell me why…he just said it would be a good idea. I thought, hey, Mom would love a dinner out, so why not. So, I gave Mom the tickets and told her to come up for the show and that I would taking her for dinner too.

Imagine my surprise when we are seated in the middle of the skaters who are having their pre-show dinner. Not only were the skaters there, but thier spouses and, in some cases, children too. My Mother was in 7th heaven! She is such a skating fan that she comments ahead of the skaters when she watches on TV. She knows a triple lutz from a double cowtow, or whatever they call those jumps. I’m just happy if they land without falling!

Part way through our dinner, a few of the skaters came over and chatted with her. It made her night! And then she discovered we had front row seats!

I’m pretty sure Mom would tell you that was the best gift I ever gave her. Personally, I thought the fresh picked bouquet of dandelion flowers that I gave her when I was 7 were pretty rocking!

PS: Did I mention we were the only non skaters in our section of the restaurant? That bartender was so sweet for doing that!

  79. Micheline says:

The best gift that I have ever given my mother is probably breakfast in bed (when I was 7 or 8) and even though the breakfast making was a family affair, we all managed to burn the food :( (but the reason I think it was the best present is because my mom still ate it ) so yes: the thought counts :)

The best present I have received is 5 spa days: my parents got me (and me 2 sisters plus my mom) a spa package which consisted of a massage day, a makeup day, a hair cut/ color, a manicure and a pedicure :)

    Thanks mom and dad :)

  80. shawn rose says:

the best mother’s day gift given to me includes two things combined- the gift of time and flowers. every year i would be able to go and pick all of the flowers i wanted for my garden as well as a day to myself to prepare and plant them :) now, to be honest, the very best gift always has and always will be, my children themselves. :)
